Well it's this simple, if your public don't know you have a product for sale then obviously they won't buy it DUH !!!! make sense so far ? In this modern society advertising is paramount to success, so essentially any advertising is good advertising. Even a small campaign localised to your own website can dramatically increase your sales ratio, but in reality the more places you have an advert showing the bigger your chances of boosting your sales become.

Where To Place your Adverts When placing your ad you must consider just who you want to target , do you target just everybody and hope that you pick up a sale here and there ? Or do you be selective and only target the people in specific catagories.? The shotgun approach (targeting all) works to a degree, because the laws of averages point to the fact that you will interest a % of the overall target group. but getting two or three interested people out of every 1000 means that there is possibly 997 wasted chances . It's better by far to select a category of people that connect closely with your product . For example you have a CD that's Christian in orientation pushing this at a Rock or Heavy metal audience is NOT going to work , whereas offering it up to Christian based websites and radio will immediately increase your potential for sales. I know this is all pretty basic info but it's amazing just how many people negelect this simple strategy when trying to sell a product.

Simple rule to follow , spend as much as you can afford to without going broke. Big companies especially those in the entertainment & music industry spend millions of $'s on advertising EVERY DAY. They can afford to because they are getting a good return on their products. We as Indie's unfortunately don't have the backing of multi million Dollar international conglomerates so we have to be more frugal with what we have got. So pick your campaigns carefully, get the best bang for your buck that you can , if you can get a 1000 impressions of your ad for $5 take it, if you sell 1 CD from it at say $15 that gives you $10 profit on that CD spend another $5 get another 1000 impressions and maybe sell 2 CD's next time that's $30 from 3 CD's with still $5 to invest in another 1000 impressions do you see where I'm going here ?. This is advertising on a shoestring 101 LOL .
